Product Overview
In 1939, Philadelphia’s Gum, Inc. tried to establish itself in the fledgling baseball-card marketplace by issuing a black-and-white ‘Play Ball’ set. These cards were the only true national competition to the Goudey name in the late ‘30s, though like Goudey, the Play Ball line would ultimately fall to the same uncontrollable fate — the outbreak of World War II. The 1939 Play Ball set features all 161 cards produced for that year, with a nice black and white photo of the player on the front of the card and the backs feature each player’s vital info along with a thorough
biography. Stars abound in this set, some of the highlights include Leo Durocher, Bobby Doerr, Joe DiMaggio, Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, and Hank
Greenberg. Card number 126 was not issued.
